The Cayman Islands Aircraft Registry
The Cayman Islands Aircraft Registry is the registry of choice for many owners and management companies with corporate aircraft ranging from Cessna Citation, Gulfstream, Embraer, Airbus and Boeing Business Jets. The Civil Aviation Authority of the Cayman Islands (CAACI) is the statutory body responsible for aviation regulatory oversight throughout the Cayman Islands and for aircraft registered in the Cayman Islands. The CAACI works in close partnership with a specialized group of legal firms and Cayman Islands Government authorities to ensure that clients have the most comprehensive counsel on every avenue of law, custom law, tax and insurance.
Aircraft Registration Application
The first phase of the submission of registration documents through VP-C Online is the Registration Application. All of the registering owner due diligence documents are required to be submitted at the time the Registration Application is submitted. For a complete list of New Client Due Diligence items required along with instructions for submission in VP-C Online, please see the Due Diligence Checklist. To request a link to an online Registration Application, an email should be sent to CAACI giving details as follows: name, company email address, telephone number.
Aircraft Registration Mark Selection
The aircraft registration mark can be selected through the online Registration Application. In section 2 of the Registration Application, a list of available marks or already reserved marks will be provided upon selecting no or yes for the question, “Is a mark reserved for this aircraft already?”. Alternatively, we can reserve a registration mark for the aircraft, given details of the aircraft and the name of the proposed registering owner, or if that is not yet available then the name of the registering agent to CAACI. The aircraft registration mark consists of 5 letters starting with VP-C. If a specific mark is desired we can check on availability otherwise we can reserve the next in sequence. The cost of the reservation is CI$500 and is refundable if the registration application is received within 3 months of the reservation.
50% Deposit on the Initial Certificate of Airworthiness
A requirement on the due diligence checklist is a 50% deposit on the initial Certificate of Airworthiness to a minimum of CI$2,000/US$2,439.02. We can provide this invoice and a quote on the initial/first year registration costs as well as subsequent annual costs if these are required before completing/submitting the Registration Application. Requests for quotes and 50% invoice with details of the aircraft: type, year, msn and maximum take-off weight (MTOW) of the aircraft and the location of the aircraft for the initial survey should be sent to the Civil Aviation Authority of the Cayman Islands.
Applicability
Aircraft operated in the Private Category must not be used for commercial operations which are defined as those being for “hire or reward”.
Should you be interested in conducting commercial operations please contact the CAACI for information concerning application for an Air Operator Certificate (AOC) under OTAR Part 121 or Part 135.
Weight Restriction
Other than aircraft where the Operational Base is approved to be in the Cayman Islands, it is the CAACI’s policy to only accept aircraft of a Certified Maximum Take-Off Weight (MTOW) exceeding 12,500lbs/5,700kg for registration on the C.I. Aircraft Registry.
Exceptions are considered, and decisions for acceptance are based on generality of interests to aviation on the Cayman Islands aircraft register in respect of modern light turbojet, turboprop aircraft and helicopters based on Cayman Islands registered yachts.
Age Restriction
For aircraft with a manufacturing year of 1990 or earlier:
There is no set age restriction. However, before a Registration Application is submitted for CAACI acceptance, applicants within this category are requested to inquire directly to our Air Safety Division to the Director of Air Safety Regulation or the Manager of Airworthiness of the Civil Aviation Authority of the Cayman Islands.
The inquiry should be in regard to the suitability of the aircraft for inclusion on the Cayman Islands Aircraft Register.
The following details of the aircraft should be provided:
- Its designation
- Year of manufacture
- TCDS compliance
- Current State of register
- Précis of Operating history and details of any modifications incorporated required to comply with current certification and operating requirements.
Each aircraft will be considered on a case by case basis.
Issue of Cayman Islands Certificate of Registration
